Reverse description The god Nilus reclines to the left upon a crocodile, holding a reed in one hand and a cornucopia in the other, emblematic of the fertility and abundance of the Nile. The regnal year numeral ΙϚ appears in the upper field, while lotus flowers are depicted in the lower field or exergue, reinforcing the Egyptian iconographic programme. The date legend L ΙΒ appears in the field, denoting regnal year 12 of Trajan according to the Alexandrian calendar. The reverse type is a standard and celebrated motif on Alexandrian coinage, closely associated with Egyptian prosperity.
