Methymna was the second city of Lesbos, consistently overshadowed by Mytilene yet stubbornly productive in its civic coinage through the Severan period. The magistrate name preserved in the obverse legend — Zosimos — anchors this piece to a specific local official whose tenure under Alexander's reign represents one of the few surviving administrative traces of the city's Roman-era governance. Methymna's coinage under Alexander is scarce relative to larger provincial centers, a reflection of the city's modest but independent civic ambitions rather than any disruption to the mint.
