Two military standards flank the central composition, one to either side of the altar, emphasizing the civic and military prestige of Nicaea. The ethnic legend ΝΙΚΑΙΕΩΝ is disposed around the field, identifying the issuing city. The overall composition reflects the standard reverse iconography of Bithynian provincial bronzes of the Severan period. |
