Year 3 of Marcus Aurelius's reign — the regnal year encoded in the L Γ date formula — coincided with the opening of the Parthian War, when Vologases IV's forces overran Roman Armenia and destroyed a full legion under Severianus at Elegeia. Egypt's mints continued issuing bronze for local circulation throughout, the Alexandrian tetradrachm and its associated bronze fractions functioning as a closed currency system that never left the province by design.
