| Beschrijving keerzijde | A tall honorific column dominates the field, its summit bearing a standing male statue of an emperor in full military dress, facing front, holding a spear in one hand and a sword in the other. The column is flanked on either side by a hexastyle temple rendered in perspective, each pediment surmounted by a star, representing the two neocorate temples of Pergamum and affirming the city's double neocorate status. This elaborate civic reverse type celebrates Pergamum's prestigious role as twice temple-warden of the imperial cult. The reverse legend, ΕΠΙ ΝΙΚοΜΗΔοΥϹ Β ΝΕΟΚΟΡΩΝ ΠΕΡΓΑΜΗΝΩΝ, distributed around the design, names the magistrate Nikomedes and records the double neocorate of the Pergamenes. The composition is characteristic of the monumental civic coinage of Asia Minor under Marcus Aurelius. |
