Year 21 of Hadrian's reign coincided with his final extended stay in Egypt — he had visited in 130 AD, during which his companion Antinous drowned in the Nile, prompting an immediate deification and the founding of Antinoöpolis. By regnal year 21, Hadrian was in physical decline and had already named his successor, yet the Alexandrian mint continued issuing dated bronzes with a regularity that makes precise year attribution possible — one of the few provincial series where regnal year notation is consistent enough to anchor specific historical moments.
