Year 20 of Hadrian's reign — the regnal year encoded in the "L Κ" date formula used by the Alexandrian mint — falls squarely within the aftermath of the Bar Kokhba revolt, which had devastated Judaea and reshaped Roman policy across the eastern provinces. Alexandria itself remained the administrative and commercial pivot of Roman Egypt, and its bronze coinage functioned as a closed currency system: Egyptian bronzes did not circulate outside the province, and foreign coins were exchanged at the border. The mint produced an unusually diverse iconographic output under Hadrian, reflecting his personal visits to Egypt in 130-131 AD and his sustained interest in Egyptian religious tradition.
