Reverse description Emperor Hadrian, laureate and wearing the toga, stands facing right in a quadriga drawn by four elephants, holding an eagle-tipped sceptre in his right hand and a branch in his left. The elephants are depicted in procession to the right, their massive forms rendered with characteristic Alexandrian attention to exotic detail. This reverse type, evoking the triumph and imperial apotheosis imagery associated with the elephant quadriga, is a prestige issue of the Alexandrian mint. The regnal date legend L ΙΖ appears in the field, denoting the seventeenth year of Hadrian's reign in the Egyptian calendar.
