| Beschrijving keerzijde | The emperor Hadrian, depicted laureate and wearing a toga, stands erect in a biga drawn by two centaurs advancing to the right. Hadrian holds an eagle-tipped sceptre in one hand and raises the other arm in a gesture of address or salutation. Each centaur carries a Nike (Victory), lending a strongly triumphal character to the composition. The regnal year date appears in the field. This reverse type is characteristic of the early Alexandrian coinage struck to celebrate Hadrian's accession and his association with imperial victory. |
