Reverse description Athena, helmeted and in military dress, seated left upon a large round shield, extending a patera in her right hand toward Tyche of Nicaea, who stands facing right before her. Tyche holds the infant Dionysus in her arms, alluding to the city's mythological traditions. The composition is a skillfully balanced two-figure group conveying divine patronage of the city. The reverse legend ΝΙΚΑΙΕΩΝ arcs around the field, identifying the issuing civic authority.

Additional information

Nicaea's civic bronze output under Gordian III was prolific — the city leveraged imperial favor aggressively during his reign, producing a wide range of denominations and types to assert local prestige within Bithynia. The mint was among the most active in the region, and the volume of surviving material reflects it.

At 24 grams, this falls at the heavier end of the city's Æ33 production, suggesting an earlier strike before progressive die wear and metal economies trimmed later issues.
