Obverse description Confronted busts of the Emperor Gordian III and Empress Tranquillina facing one another: Gordian III depicted radiate, draped, and cuirassed to the right as seen from the front, and Tranquillina with a diademed and draped bust to the left. The obverse legend encircles the paired imperial effigies, naming both rulers in Greek characters. The facing arrangement of the two busts is a characteristic feature of provincial coinage issued to commemorate the imperial marriage.
