| Beschrijving keerzijde | The Roman emperor Gordian III, laureate and seated right upon a raised platform or throne, holds a sceptre surmounted by an eagle in his right hand. Before him stands Abgar X Phraates, king of Osroene, facing left and attired in eastern royal dress including a tiara, presenting a Nike (Victory) figure in his right hand while holding a sword in his left. The scene commemorates the diplomatic meeting between the two rulers and is unique in provincial coinage for depicting a reigning foreign monarch alongside a Roman emperor. The Greek bilingual legend identifying both rulers surrounds the composition. |
