Bagis was a minor Lydian city whose civic coinage under Caracalla frequently named local magistrates in the legend — the ΕΠΙ ΑϹΚΛΗΠΙΑΔΟΥ formula identifies the sitting strategos or archon responsible for the issue, a common accountability mechanism in the conventus of Sardis. The title ΜΗΤ ΑΡΧ suggests a gymnasiarch or similar civic office held by one Asklepiades, a name unsurprisingly common in a region saturated with the cult of Asklepios. Bagis issues are thinly documented; the city minted sporadically and in small volume, which accounts for the rarity of attributed specimens in modern collections.
