Year five of Antoninus Pius's reign — the regnal year encoded in the "L Ε" date formula — fell early enough in his principate that Alexandria's mint was still calibrating output following Hadrian's death in 138. The Egyptian provincial series operated entirely outside the imperial mint system, struck under prefectural authority and denominated in drachms rather than the Roman standard, which is why these bronzes circulated only within Egypt's borders and rarely traveled.
