Year five of Antoninus Pius's reign — the regnal year indicated by the L Ε reverse date — places this coin squarely in the early Antonine period when Alexandria's mint was operating at considerable volume to serve Egypt's cash economy. The Alexandrian bronze series operated entirely outside the Roman imperial coinage system; Egypt functioned as a closed currency zone, meaning provincials could not use standard Roman currency and had to exchange at the border, a policy that funneled hard currency profits directly to the imperial fiscus.
