Reverse description The Tyche of Edessa is depicted seated left upon a rocky outcrop, holding ears of corn in her extended hand as a symbol of civic prosperity. A lighted altar appears at her feet, and a star is placed in each field to either side of the figure. In the lower exergue, a river god swims to the left, personifying the Daisan (Skirtos) river upon which Edessa was situated. The reverse legend in Greek identifies the metropolitan colonial status of the city.
