Miletus had long ceased to be the dominant Ionian commercial power it once was, but the city retained enough civic pride — and enough wealth from its wool trade and sacred status at the Didymaion — to maintain an active bronze coinage under the Severan dynasty. The magistrate names in the legend, Poplaios Ailios Ailianos and Orbanos, anchor this piece to a specific civic administration, a detail that occasionally allows cross-referencing with local inscriptions from the same period.
Provincial bronzes of this size from Miletus are underrepresented in major collections relative to neighboring Ephesus and Smyrna.
