Alabanda, a Carian city whose civic pride consistently outran its political importance, struck bronze issues under Septimius Severus during a period when provincial mints across Asia Minor were competing aggressively for imperial favor — coinage being one of the more visible ways a city demonstrated loyalty to a new dynasty. Severus came to power through civil war in 193 AD, defeating Pescennius Niger and Clodius Albinus in succession, and cities in the eastern provinces had backed the wrong man. Demonstrating alignment with the victor carried real consequence.
The Alabanda conventus designation reflects Roman administrative reorganization of Caria under the assize system centered on that city.
