Mylasa was one of the older Carian cities, its civic coinage stretching back centuries before Roman administrative reorganization folded it into the Alabanda conventus for judicial purposes. Under Septimius Severus, provincial bronzes from this region proliferated as cities competed for imperial favor during a reign that began in civil war — Severus defeated at least two rival claimants, Pescennius Niger and Clodius Albinus, before consolidating power. Civic mints across Asia Minor accelerated output in the 190s partly as a practical signal of loyalty.
Mylasa's issues from this reign are relatively scarce in collections today, reflecting modest original output rather than heavy attrition in circulation.
