The ΟΜΟΝΟΙΑ ("homonoia") coinage between Laodicea ad Lycum and Smyrna documents a formal alliance between two cities that were geographically remote from one another — Laodicea in the Lycus valley of Phrygia, Smyrna on the Aegean coast — and whose pairing was almost certainly brokered through the provincial convention system rather than any natural commercial bond. These alliance coins functioned as diplomatic statements, often minted to coincide with festivals, embassies, or the arrival of a new emperor requiring coordinated civic loyalty displays. Philip I's accession in 244 provided exactly that occasion.
Laodicea was one of the wealthier cities of the Cibyra conventus and a prolific bronze issuer under the Severans and their successors, but homonoia types with Smyrna are among its rarer civic pairings.
