Adramyteum, a coastal city in Mysia, held enough civic standing under the Severans and their successors to strike substantial bronze issues in its own name — a privilege tied to local elite competition for the office of magistrate, whose name the coin commemorates. The magistrate here, Claudius Phelix, is otherwise unattested outside the coin record. His tenure fell within Gordian III's reign, a period when provincial bronze production across Asia Minor was still vigorous but would collapse almost entirely within a generation as the third-century crisis deepened.
