Aezani, a Phrygian city in the conventus of Sardis, was among the more prosperous inland minting centers of Roman Asia Minor, its wealth underpinned by the famous temple of Zeus whose construction had dragged on for generations before Hadrian finally settled a land dispute over the sanctuary estates — though that resolution came well after this coin's time. Under Domitian, provincial bronze issues like this one filled the gap left by Rome's deliberate restriction of precious-metal coinage in the eastern provinces. The city's minting activity under the Flavians is relatively modest in the surviving record.
