Reverse description Apollo of Grynium rendered standing, facing the viewer, with head turned to the left. The deity extends a patera in one hand over a thymiaterium (incense altar), while the other hand holds a filleted laurel branch, referencing the celebrated oracular sanctuary of Apollo Gryneus in Aeolis. The composition reflects the civic pride of Myrina in the Gryneion cult site located in its territory.

Additional information

Myrina's civic bronze issues under Commodus fall within the first years of his sole reign, after the death of Marcus Aurelius in March 180. The strategos named in the legend — whose abbreviated title ΕΠΙ ϹΤΡ precedes the partial name ΑΡΦΟΚΡΑ — served as the locally accountable magistrate whose name guaranteed the issue, a Greek civic practice Rome permitted to continue across Aeolis well into the third century.

The alpha with curved crossbar noted in the legend is a documented epigraphic quirk appearing on select Myrinaean bronzes and can assist in die-linking this piece to a narrower production window within the 180–182 range.
