The homonoia coinage between Smyrna and Philadelphia reflects the competitive diplomacy of Asia Minor's civic elite, where neighboring cities negotiated formal friendship agreements partly to share prestige and partly to resolve ongoing disputes over territorial rights and cult precedence. Philadelphia's claim to the Conventus of Sardis placed it in perpetual rivalry with wealthier neighbors, and joint issues like this one were as much political instruments as they were coins.
The archon Orestinos is attested on a small cluster of issues from this period, allowing approximate dating within Commodus's reign.
