| Beschrijving keerzijde | Bearded head of Sarapis facing right, the syncretic Greco-Egyptian deity depicted with his characteristic features including a full, wavy beard and the modius (grain measure or kalathos) atop the head, emblematic of his association with fertility and the underworld. The portrait is boldly executed in high relief, consistent with the local Punic–Hellenistic artistic tradition of Byzacena. The Phoenician legend 𐤕𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤕, reading the city name Thaena, appears in the field to the right of the head. The reverse design reflects the syncretic religious milieu of Roman North Africa, where Sarapis was widely venerated alongside local deities. |
