At his feet to one side stands a small lighted altar, an attribute commonly associated with the syncretic cult of Sarapis in the eastern provinces. The reverse type reflects the widespread veneration of Sarapis in Bithynia during the Severan period. The ethnic legend ΝΙΚΑΙΕΩΝ appears in the field, identifying the issuing civic authority of Nicaea. |
