Antioch of Pisidia was a Roman colony — Colonia Caesarea — planted by Augustus to anchor Roman military and administrative control over the interior of Asia Minor. Its coins consistently invoke Roman colonial identity with unusual insistence, and this issue is no exception. The Genius type served a specific civic-religious function in colonial contexts, tied to the protective spirit of the colony itself rather than any individual.
Septimius Severus came to power through civil war, defeating Niger at nearby Issus in 194 AD. Provincial bronzes from his reign issued by Pisidian Antioch are relatively scarce in the AMNG corpus — Kubitschek's entry for this type lists very few specimens.
