The effigy is rendered in the vigorous provincial style characteristic of Phrygian civic coinage. The encircling Greek legend occupies the border of the flan, partially visible around the bust. The portrait conveys the youthful features of the emperor as co-ruler during the reign of Septimius Severus. |

Amorium sat in the Phrygian interior, far enough from the Aegean coast that its civic bronze coinage served genuine local exchange needs rather than ceremonial pretense. The magistrate name rendered in the obverse legend — Elpidephoros — is otherwise poorly attested, and this issue represents one of the few epigraphic traces of his tenure. Civic bronze of the Synnada conventus under the Severan dynasty tends to survive in low grades; the region saw continuous agricultural use of small coinage with little reason for hoarding.
