Amasea, situated on the Iris River in Pontus, held unusual civic pride for a provincial city — it was the birthplace of the geographer Strabo and had served as the royal capital of the Pontic kingdom before Roman annexation. The legend fragment ΜΗ ΝΕ Π Π encodes the city's neokoros status and its relationship with the imperial cult, honors that Amasea lobbied hard to obtain and prominently advertised on bronze civic issues throughout the Severan period.
The dating formula ΕΤ ϹΗ places this coin in the 208th year of the local Pontic era, corresponding to 205–206 AD, when Septimius was consolidating dynastic arrangements for his sons Caracalla and Geta.
