Beschrijving voorzijde Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Balbinus facing right, rendered in three-quarter frontal view, with the emperor's characteristic full beard and broad features. The cuirass is visible at the shoulder, conveying imperial military authority. The circular Greek legend runs around the periphery of the flan, partially legible due to the irregular strike. The portrait style is consistent with provincial bronze coinage of the Severan-era tradition, with a bold, high-relief effigy typical of Bithynian civic issues.

Aanvullende informatie

Pupienus and Balbinus were joint emperors for just 99 days in 238 AD before both were murdered by the Praetorian Guard — the same year that saw five emperors in total. Nicomedia's civic pride in its double neokorate status, earned through imperial cult worship, made it unusually quick to acknowledge new rulers, and the pairing of both co-emperors on a single provincial bronze is a direct product of that brief, chaotic window.
