Trapezus, the Black Sea port that would later become Trebizond, minted provincially under Philip I during a period when the emperor was consolidating legitimacy after arranging the death of his predecessor Gordian III on campaign. The city's dating formula — incorporating the Pontic provincial era alongside the regnal year — is among the more complex chronological conventions in Asia Minor bronze coinage, and correctly parsing it is what pins this piece to 244–245 rather than the broader Philip I reign.
