| Beschrijving keerzijde | An erect serpent with the head of Sarapis, crowned with the kalathos (modius), coiled or rearing upon the back of a saddled and bridled horse walking to the right. This syncretic religious type, combining the Hellenistic deity Sarapis with the sacred serpent (Agathodaimon), is characteristic of Alexandrian provincial coinage and reflects the religious iconography of Roman Egypt. The reverse legend in Greek gives the regnal year in the field. The overall strike is typical of Alexandrian provincial bronze coinage of the Antonine period. |
