Docimeum, in the Phrygian interior, was one of the great marble-quarrying centers of the ancient world — its *pavonazzetto* shipped across the empire for imperial building projects. The city's right to strike bronze coinage under Roman administration was a civic privilege, and issues naming a local archon like this one tied municipal prestige directly to the reigning emperor. The archon formula ΕΠΙ with a named magistrate is characteristic of Phrygian civic bronzes and allows approximate dating within a reign rather than to a specific year.
