| 裏面の説明 | The cult statue of Artemis of Ephesus (Artemis Ephesia) depicted standing, facing, in the canonical hieratic posture, wearing a kalathos (cylindrical crown) upon her head and supported by lateral struts or brackets at her sides. The goddess is flanked by two stags, her sacred animals, one on each side. A crescent appears at left and a star at right in the field, emblems associated with her lunar and celestial aspects. The reverse legend ΑΡΤΕΜΙϹ ΕΦΕϹΙΩΝ curves around the design, identifying the type as the Artemis of the Ephesians, referencing the celebrated cult image housed in the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. |

Issued during the co-reign of Marcus Aurelius and Commodus, this bronze falls within a politically charged moment: Commodus was elevated to co-emperor in 177 AD partly in response to anxieties over succession following the Antonine plague and the Marcomannic Wars. Ephesus, as the administrative seat of the Asian conventus and the largest city in the province, produced civic bronzes at considerable volume during this period, often leveraging its status as the preeminent cult center of Artemis to assert regional prestige against rival cities like Smyrna and Pergamon.
