| Beschrijving keerzijde | Dionysus, the divine patron and mythical founder venerated by Nicaea, is depicted seated to the left upon an elaborate ceremonial cart or biga drawn by four elephants advancing to the right. The god holds a cantharus in his extended right hand and a thyrsus — the emblematic staff of Dionysus — in his left. The quadriga of elephants, symbolising triumph and divine power, fills the reverse field with considerable compositional dynamism. The Greek legend is distributed across the reverse field, identifying the honorific context of the issue. The reverse type reflects Nicaea's civic pride and its mythological association with Dionysus as city founder. |
