Viminacium's colonial bronze coinage is unusual in Roman provincial numismatics for carrying an explicit regnal year — the AN (anno) notation reset to year one when the colony received its title under Gordian III in 239 AD, making AN III a precise anchor to 241–242. The city sat at the confluence of the Mlava and Danube rivers and served as headquarters of Legio VII Claudia, which gave it both the economic weight and the political standing to operate a mint of this output.

The AMNG I/1 series for Viminacium was catalogued by Behrendt Pick in 1898 and remains the foundational reference, though Varbanov's later corpus corrected several of Pick's die groupings for this precise type.
