Magnesia ad Maeandrum held the rare distinction of claiming two mythological founding traditions simultaneously — one Thessalian, one Lydian — and civic coinage under Gordian III was one of the primary ways the city projected that dual identity outward to the broader Greek world. The magistrate name ΦΩΤΕΙΝΟΥ places this issue within a documented sequence of civic bronzes attributable to a specific grammateus, the elected secretary responsible for authorizing and overseeing local emissions.
Gordian III's reign generated unusually dense provincial bronze production across the Maeander valley, partly because his campaigns in the east disrupted normal trade flows and increased demand for local fiduciary currency.
