Gallienus ruled Egypt's mint at Alexandria through a network of prefects, never visiting the province himself. The "L ΙΒ" regnal year notation — Egypt's distinctive dating system tied to the Alexandrian calendar rather than Roman consular years — places this piece in his twelfth regnal year, a period when the empire had already fractured into three competing powers. Gallienus held the centre while Postumus ruled the breakaway Gallic Empire in the west and the Palmyrene kingdom consolidated in the east.
Alexandria continued striking bronze provincials long after most eastern mints had collapsed or shifted allegiance. This issue belongs to that stubborn continuity.
