| Reverse description | The personification of Smyrna seated left on a throne or chair, her upper body partially draped, holding aloft a small tetrastyle temple in her extended right hand, an attribute emblematic of the city's pride in its sacred architecture. In her left hand or at her side she holds a double axe (labrys), a symbol of ancient Anatolian religious tradition associated with the region. The seated figure is rendered with naturalistic modelling typical of high-quality provincial bronze coinage. The abbreviated ethnic ΖΜΥΡ appears in the field, while the proconsular name and titulature of L. Mestrius Florus frames the design in the surrounding legend. |
