The imagery deliberately links the two great cities, Pergamum and Ephesus, through their principal deities—Asclepius and Artemis—reflecting the honorific alliance expressed in the reverse legend. The composition is typical of joint-issue provincial bronzes celebrating civic partnerships (homonoia) between Pergamum and Ephesus.
