Hierapolis in Phrygia — not to be confused with the better-known Syrian city of the same name — sat within the conventus of Cibyra, a Roman judicial district organized under the provincial administration of Asia. The city's bronze coinage under Trajan reflects a period of genuine civic prosperity; Hierapolis controlled significant textile and dyeing industries, and its thermal springs drew enough commercial traffic to sustain an active local mint. These civic bronzes circulated almost exclusively within the immediate region, functioning as small-change that never traveled far.
