Cotiaeum, a Phrygian city of modest regional standing, issued this bronze under the archonship of Publius Aelius Demetrius Celeros — his second term in office, as the ΤΟ Β explicitly records. The naming of magistrates on provincial bronzes was not mere civic vanity; it anchored the issue to a specific administrative moment and gave local elites a durable form of public record far more permanent than papyrus. Severus Alexander's reign saw a notable surge in such civic bronze production across Asia Minor, partly because imperial mints were prioritizing silver and the provinces filled the small-denomination gap themselves.
