Teos had been a quietly prosperous Ionian city for centuries before Severus came to power, best known as the birthplace of Anacreon and as a major center of Dionysiac cult activity. The city maintained its own civic coinage under the Smyrna conventus, with local magistrates — here the strategos T. Kl. Peisoneinos — named on issues as a mark of municipal honor rather than administrative function. Such appointments were fiercely competed among the Teian elite.
The magistrate's name is rendered in the genitive, following the standard epigraphic convention for civic bronzes of the Antonine and Severan periods in Asia Minor.
