The dating formula on this coin — Anno CCLV, year 255 of Sinope's local era — anchors it to 209–210 AD, when Septimius Severus had just returned from his British campaigns and was consolidating dynastic authority through his sons Caracalla and Geta. Sinope, a Roman colony since Julius Caesar's settlement of 47 BC, maintained its own civic calendar from that founding, making these year-dated bronzes unusually precise chronological documents among provincial issues.
The colony's Pontic location gave it strategic importance as a Black Sea port, and its mint remained active well into the Severan period.
