| Reverse description | Dionysus, the god of wine, depicted standing facing left in a relaxed contrapposto stance, extending a cantharus (wine cup) downward toward a small satyr at his feet, while his right hand holds a thyrsus (fennel staff tipped with a pine cone), the emblematic attribute of the deity. A panther, sacred animal of Dionysus, crouches at his feet to the right. The composition reflects the widespread veneration of Dionysus in Phrygian civic coinage, rendered in the bold, somewhat provincial relief characteristic of Asia Minor bronze issues. |
