Ceramus was a minor Carian city whose civic coinage under Septimius Severus reflects a period of intense municipal competition for imperial favor — cities throughout the Conventus of Alabanda issued bronze in his name partly to signal loyalty during the civil wars of 193 AD that brought him to power. The magistrate name preserved in the legend, Themistokles son of Apollonides, is otherwise unattested, making this piece one of the few surviving records of his tenure.
