| Beschrijving keerzijde | The celebrated cult statue of Artemis Ephesia depicted frontally in the characteristic xoanon pose, standing erect between two stags at her sides, her arms extended and supported by lateral struts in the traditional manner of the great idol housed in the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus. A star and crescent adorn either side of her elaborate polos headdress, emphasising her celestial associations. The reverse legend ΕΦΕϹΙΩΝ ΑΡΤΕΜΙϹ ΑϹΥΛΟϹ is distributed around the field, proclaiming the inviolable asylum status of the Ephesian sanctuary. The composition reflects the well-established iconographic type of the Ephesian Artemis widely employed on civic coinage of the city throughout the imperial period. |
