Additional information

The civic title ΑΔΡΙΑΝΩΝ ΚΙΑΝΩΝ — "of the Hadrianic Cianians" — reflects an honorific awarded to Cius by Hadrian during his extensive tour of the eastern provinces in the early second century, a trip that showered cities along his route with titles, buildings, and benefactions in exchange for loyalty and flattery. When Marcus Aurelius acceded in 161 AD, provincial mints across Bithynia issued bronze to mark the transition; this piece belongs to that first year of the new reign, before the Parthian war consumed imperial attention entirely.
