Nicaea's civic bronze issues under Marcus Aurelius reflect the city's aggressive pursuit of honorific status during the early joint reign with Lucius Verus. The ΝΕΙΚΑΙΕΩΝ legend asserts civic identity in a period when Bithynian cities competed intensely — sometimes litigiously — for titles like "metropolis" and "first city," rivalries that drew imperial arbitration more than once in the second century.
Provincial bronzes of this module from Nicaea in 161–162 are dated by the accession year, placing this issue within months of Antoninus Pius's death in March 161.
