| Reverse description | Elaborate mythological foundation scene of Ilium. At left, the river god Ilos reclines to the right, his arm resting on an uncertain object, personifying the legendary founder of the city. In the centre, Zeus appears seated upon a cloud, holding a transverse sceptre in one hand and poised to cast the sacred Palladium downward. To the right, a cow hangs suspended from a pole facing left, while a man grasps her horn and draws a knife across her throat in a sacrificial act. The reverse ethnic legend ΙΛΙΕΩΝ appears in the field, identifying the issuing civic authority. |
